Debating Temples

I recently attended an NDTV talk show with a few friends of mine. The show was called Left Right & Centre, hosted by the very pretty and very sharp Nidhi Raazdan, and was about the top national developments of the week. The panelists included the well known Union Minister Kapil Sibbal, the lesser known Sudheendra Kulkarni from the BJP, Nandita Das and one more lawyer whose name I cant recall. The audience consisted mainly of college going kids like us, the so-called 'youth' of today.

The BJP had come out with its manifesto the same day, and that was the main talking point of the show. No wait! One paragraph was the talking point - The Ram Mandir!! Nidhi Raazdan and the entire audience attacked poor Mr. Kulkarni for being a member of this communal party, which is trying to divide the nation along communal lines, which is trying to cash on vote-bank politics, which is just not realizing what the youth wants and what not. Firstly, I have never seen so biased a host! Nidhi Raazdan must be a registered Congress volunteer or something, because she left no stone unturned in embarrassing Mr Kulkarni, without even giving him adequate time to speak (Mr. Sibbal faced no such problems). Moving on, I was surprised to see many of my fellow audience members practically boiling with anger over the Ram Mandir issue. 'Mr Kulkarni! We dont care about temples! We want development! Dont disillusion the youth with your communal politics! We are disgusted! By bringing the Ram Mandir back, you have shown us yet again that all you care about is Hindutva!' I admit that the youth does not care whether Ayodhya gets a fancy temple or not, but I was quite appalled with such extreme reactions. So I decided to have a look at the so called 'communal' manifesto. Guess what? Ram Mandir finds a brief spot in the penultimate page, under the heading : Preserving Our Cultural Heritage. Here is the exact text:

There is an overwhelming desire of the people in India and abroad to have a grand temple at the birth place of Sri Ram in Ayodhya. The BJP will explore all possibilities, including negotiations and judicial proceedings, to facilitate the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

Come on guys! Is this communal? It says negotiations and judicial proceedings! Its on the second last page! Can these 4 lines actually disillusion the 'youth' ?? And those who think the party plays the Hindutva card, please check the Minority Communities section of the manifesto - which by the way comes much before the Ram Mandir and takes up much more print space.

There is a very strong possibility that Nidhi Raazdan and her friends at NDTV will never discuss what's written on the remaining 48 pages of the manifesto. Its not spicy you see! It talks about development, not Hindus vs Muslims. And since NDTV and others will not discuss those pages, the informed and aware youth of this country will not read it either. Any guy who watched Left Right & Centre that night would've thought - That damn BJP - arrogant communal party - I'll never give them my vote! Well, hopefully some of us will actually bother to read the manifestos of both the parties, and make a truly 'informed' decision! I'm not saying that we should all vote for BJP instead, but not voting for them purely because of hyped up issues like the Ram Mandir is surely not right.

  1. Didn't you know, NDTV is Congress's whore. No really, that IS the exact word. You can switch that channel on any time and it's always the same... jai jai rahul gandhi and advani modi murdabad.

I feel terrible to live in a country where the 'majority' is treated like the filth of the sewers. I'm sure the NDTV wants a manifesto which vows to abolish all temples in the country and erect mosques in their place. Now that sure seems like a secular idea. In this country, the only political equations which hold valid is this:

Equal treatment for hindus and muslims =communal
Appease muslims in all ways possible= secular

Even though I haven't watched any TV coverage for the elections, I have a feeling that terrorism policy is not one of the things given a lot of airtime (Varun Gandhi's actions are so much more spicy). Here is an incumbent party which has still not done anything about the attacks and yet...

And these other kids you're talking about; well, all I can say is: pseudo-intellectual. Or they were just too charmed by the pretty Ms. Razdaan :P [much more likely, in hindsight].

  3. That's a very enlightening view on the subject. Didn't figure NDTV'd plugging Congress.

Currently I am not as bugged with these debates, as I am with the advertisements that keep popping up. Almost every channel and during each commercial either BJP or Congress blares outta the TV speakers...!!! Bugs me to hell. It suddenly seems like voting for either BJP or Congress are the only options we have. Doesn't really spread your wings much does it? I wish some news channel would do a show on the smaller entities for a change. Just so we know 'who else' is in the rat race. Maybe, just maybe we might find someone worth our efforts to vote.

I am curious though... whatever happened to that 'Lead India' Campaign....?!?!? Where did that get to?

  4. A good post, and as you know, I am on your side totally on this subject. But there is something which I didn;t like about it. Its the last line, wherein you have passingly mentioned the Ram Mandir issue as another hyped up issue. Your point that one should look at the manifesto i totality and not just this point is pretty valid, but what I think is that its an issue which deserves all the hype that surrounds it as and when it is mentioned. What we cannot neglect is the fact that it essayed a key role in bringing BJP in power. So the million dollar question is, did a majority of us want something like to happen, and if we did, why the hell are we against it now...???

The best part of the Video is where Dr. Shourie called NDTV's bluff. When the news channels are not being fair in reporting, they need to be told specifically. NDTV has always been biased in their news reporting where it keeps pushing one side (BJP) on the defence while backing Congress.

  6. Well that’s the problem you see...the Indian media (especially English) routinely invite elite class to participate talk shows that are meant for viewer ship by elite class. While I don't care too much about Temple in Ayodhya, but I do care about free & fair exchange of ideas - isn't that hallmark of true democracy? The talk show participants are typically media created celebrities (ex. Nandita Das, Arundhuti Roy, Shobha De, Mahesh Bhatt etc.) who are not exactly top draws in their respective profession but newsmakers nevertheless via self created controversies. I wonder how many of them actually go out to vote! Subhashis
